ABOUT THE WORK

AK Organic Abstracts features the original traditional and digital paintings as well as graphic design by artist AK Westerman. Her work is characterized by fantastic scenes and characters that mingle organic and mechanical elements in vivid color and intricate detail.

Westerman works in a variety of traditional mediums including watercolor, oil, acrylic, clay, wood burning (pyrography), pencil, ink and pastel.  However, her focus is on acrylics and pyrography and combining the two to create intricately intertwined compositions mixing the two mediums for depth and texture.  She works mostly with wood panel, the 1.5" or 2" deep edges (or 'cradle') of the panels wood burned in unique patterns designed to accent the piece and act as a built-in frame.  This meticulous detail sets her work apart.

THE WORK | Fantasy & Surrealism That Engage

While every piece is derived from her own personal narrative, AK always attempts to include some ambiguity, allowing the viewer to fill in pieces of the story according to their own unique perspective.  The term ‘organic’ is an apt description for both her creative process and her choice of subject matter, as she prefers to let the work take on a life of its own and her subconscious express itself freely and fluidly without preconceptions.   AK's work can be described as fantasy, steampunk, and pop surrealism.

AK has exhibited in galleries throughout the United States including Colorado, California, Ohio, Oklahoma and Texas.
